Responsibilities:
*Provide a high standard of nursing care and treatment to patients within the theatre department, as per surgeons/anaesthetic lists instructions and in conformance with recognised nursing techniques and procedures and established policy.
*Be an effective member of the multidisciplinary team.
*Assess, plan and/or implement and evaluate individual holistic nursing care and support to patients.
*Communicate effectively with patients with the aim of ensuring patient understanding comfort and well-being.
*Communicate effectively with medical staff, nursing, clerical and other health care workers to promote the health, welfare and care of patients.
*Ensure provision of comfortable, suitable and welcoming environment for patients.
*Demonstrate practice based on current advances in nursing practice and evidence-based research.
*Participate in Clinical Supervision and provide support for nursing and operating room practitioners and health care assistants.
*Supervise the nursing practise of student nurses and participate in the educational aspects of that practise including clinical assessment of placements.
*Carry out duties as deemed appropriate by Sister.
*Contribute to supporting the Sister in their duties.
*Rotate on all shifts of duty as required.
*Report to theatre sister in charge inclusive of all issues arising on previous shifts, calls, weekends.
*Participate in the care, custody and administration of medicine in accordance with hospital policy.
*Ensure the drugs records are accurately kept and any discrepancy reported immediately to the sister on duty or the evening sister.
*Develop and promote good working relationships within the wider team.
*Promote patient, staff and relative's safety at all times and be familiar with current Health & Safety policies, Cardiac Arrest and Fire Drill procedure reporting any concerns to the Sister or Theatre Manager.
*To take charge of the area during the absence of senior staff.
*To participate in discussions relating to care and its delivery and evaluation with other members of the multidisciplinary team.
*Provide clinical support to peers.
*Plans for the conservation and economical use of Hospital Supplies.
*Act and take responsibility as delegated for stock items levels in specific specialities and co-ordinates with relevant staff to ensure appropriate viability of supplies.
*Check all equipment before and after use and return equipment to its proper place.
*Report faults or broken equipment and repair needs to the sister.
*Ensure that all operating department records are maintained and check written records, charts, narcotic drug records etc must be written neatly, concisely, accurately and signed with a registered nurse.
*Be responsible for identifying own learning needs and keep up to date with professional development and research.
*Be aware of his/her role as a professional nurse and undertake practise within this framework. Be aware of legislation governing and affecting nursing protection, including Nurses Act, Scope of Practise etc.
*Review and set own objectives with Sister and review own performance within the appraisal process.
*Participate in creating an environment conducive to learning.
*To assist with induction programmes, preceptorship and mentorship of new staff as appropriate.
*Participate in, and promote, teaching within the theatre department.
*Take every opportunity to maintain and improve professional knowledge and competence.
*Undertakes all identified training in-service programmes and assessments including mandatory updates as identified necessary.
